Van Gaal Tanks First Match

Louis van Gaal enjoyed going through a series of victories and managed to stay undefeated during his entire pre-season schedule which included matches against: LA Galaxy, As.Roma, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Valencia. Everything was looking brilliant for the new coach of Manchester United, Louis van Gaal but things took a huge turn after the Dutch experienced a shocking loss in his debut match in charge of United in his first Premier League match.

In the opening match of the Premier League, Manchester United hosted Swansea City at Old Trafford and it was the visiting side that took the lead through Sung-Yong Ki as the South Korean midfielder tucked the ball into the net of David de Gea at the 28th minute. Manchester United responded with their new captain Wayne Rooney as he leveled the match 1-1 but Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson restored the lead for his club a few minutes later.

Losing in your first league match is not the way that Louis van Gaal wanted to start off and the Dutchman went on saying just how much this loss will affect his players.

Louis van Gaal said: ‘’When you win everything in preparation time and lose your first match that cannot be worse. We have built up a lot of confidence and then it will be smashed down because of this result. It’s a very bad day for us. It’s very disappointing for the players, the fans, for me, and the staff. I saw a lot of players looking very nervous, making the wrong choices and that is a pity. These players have to forget that expectation because that is Manchester United. You have to cope with that pressure. That is also a process. But we have to know that it is only one game of many games’’

This is only the start of the season and Louis van Gaal has enough time to restore the points lost but it’s definitely not the way that the Dutchman wanted to kick-off his managerial career in the Premier League.
